Dr. Ruiz's professional work includes extensive experience in designing and managing media and multicultural projects. She has developed multicultural training and educational programs for media organizations as well as for educational institutions. She served as producer of "The Network" a live, interactive, multicultural and multilingual television tutorial program for middle and high school students in San Francisco. The program was cable cast through the VIACOM cable television system and was recognized as the most watched cable access program of record. As Promotions Director and General Manger for a leading cable television company, she developed Spanish as a Second Language programs for employees and the public through cable television public access in the Greater Los Angeles area and instituted Latinos in Cable, an organization that promoted and educated members of the cable television industry about Spanish speaking cultures.

Dr. Ruiz was a Title VII Fellow at Stanford University. In 2001 she was a Faculty Fellow with the National Association of Television Program Executives and served as State Chairperson: National Association of African American, Hispanic and Latino and Studies and Affiliates 2000-2001. For 2004, Dr. Ruiz has been selected as a Fellow for the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE).

Presently, Dr. Ruiz is chair of the Department of Communication Arts, English and Humanities and teaches undergraduate courses in Communication Arts. She is also the developer of the MA in Communication Arts. Dr. Ruiz's research interests address multiculturalism and diversity issues as they relate to communications. Her latest research includes acceptance to the 2006 International Conference on Asian American Literature in the 21st Century, Beijing, China.
